Featured Green Crafter: Handmade by Suzy Q
Suzy from Derbyshire in the UK sells a range of items using vintage fabric, including bags, cards, cushion covers and purses in her etsy shop getsuzy. I personally love her funky greetings cards, made with 60s and 70s inspired prints. I asked Suzy about how she got starting on sewing and using vintage fabrics. Here is what she said: "The discovery of Etsy prompted me to dust down my sewing machine after eight long years - that and a burning desire to doing something creative, crafty and hands-on. I’ve always enjoyed making clothes out of old 60s patterns, and occasionally I would find a nice piece of vintage fabric – perhaps curtain material or another item of clothing that I could rework. The internet and the rise in popularity of all things retro now make it much easier to find fabulous fabrics. I currently make bags, cushion covers, purses and cards using a mixture of fabrics, both vintage and vintage inspired. But vintage wins hands down. Why? Well, for me it’s about the quality and the design, and also the history attached to the piece and the romance of times gone by. Moreover, it’s satisfying to be able to inject a new lease of life into something that’s possibly spent the last 40 years or so gathering dust in someone’s attic. I try to source my fabrics locally from car boot sales, second-hand shops or as donations from family and friends. Providing the condition is good, anything goes, be it a pair of curtains, an old dress, or a pretty pillowcase. And the bonus is that, with vintage, you know that when you’ve finished whatever it is you’re making, no one will have anything like it." |
