Contentment and Buying Less Stuff
Leo over at Zen Habits suggests that simplicity has a lot to do with contentment. Contentment is simply wanting what you have, rather than having what you want. In other words you can choose to be happy now, or you can tell yourself that you will be happy when you lose 10 pounds/have those boots/get married/whatever goal you have in mind. One of the steps Leo suggests to create contentment and simplicity in your life is as follows: "Stop, and consider why you want something. When you feel the urge to buy something, think about whether it’s a need or a want. If it’s a want, take a pause. It’s good to wait 30 days — keep a 30-day list … when you want something, put it on the list with the date, and if you still want it in 30 days, you can buy it). Consider why you want something. Are you not content with what you already have? Why not?" I am definitely going to start a 30 day list. And the first item on my list is a pair of black high heeled boots. I’m pretty sure I will still want a pair when the 30 days is up, as I wear my current pair around once a week, I’ve had them for about 5 years, and they are starting to look a bit worse for wear! |
