7 Steps to Shopping Greener: Buy Used
Why buy used? There are several reasons to buy used items. First of all, you will undoubtedly save money, as it is much cheaper to buy something second hand than to buy the same item new. From an environmental perspective, as the item is already in existence, no new resources are consumed, and no waste is created. A further bonus is that, with regards to purchases like fashion and furniture, your used purchase will be different to what everyone else is buying, and you won’t end up with the same stuff as all your friends. In these two areas used products can actually command a premium as ‘vintage’ fashion and ‘antique’ furniture, for this very reason. Items that are great to buy used: Books
CDs, DVDs
Computer software and games
Cars
Furniture
I also like buying used clothes and accessories, but it can be difficult to find items that fit you, and if you are buying online then obviously you can’t try things on before you buy them, so you are taking a bit of a risk. What NOT to buy used: baby or child car seats
cots and mattresses
helmets
This is a personal choice as obviously they can be washed, but I would also never buy used underwear or socks. Bleugh! Places to buy used: eBay
Craigslist
Charity shops
Flea markets, jumble sales and boot fairs (see your local paper)
For sale ads in the local paper |
